Where the name comes from
In the 1800s the copperworks along the River Tawe made Swansea a world centre of copper smelting, and the town was nicknamed Copperopolis. The Hafod and Morfa works ran until 1980.
Their engine houses still stand by the river, and the slag from the furnaces was cast into blocks that can still be seen in the listed walls of the Hafod site. Copperworks is named after them.
