Dumper hire with driver
A dumper and its driver move spoil away from the dig and bring stone, sand and blocks back to it. Hired alongside a digger, it means the digger is not left waiting while spoil is barrowed away.

Jobs a dumper and driver do
Most dumper hires run alongside one of our diggers. A dumper also works on its own where your team is digging by hand or with your own machine.
Each bucketful from the dig carried to the skip, the grab lorry or a stockpile.
Spoil moved from the back of a garden to a skip on the drive, along a path or passage.
Sub-base, sand and gravel brought from the delivery point to where it is laid.
Pallets broken down and blocks or kerbs carried to the bricklayers.
Stone or spoil tipped back into trenches once pipes are laid and inspected.
Rubble and offcuts collected around the site and taken to the skip.
Dumper sizes
Tracked dumpers go where wheels would sink or would not fit. Site dumpers carry more on open, firm ground.
| Machine | Width | Tip | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked dumper, 0.5 tonne | 700 mm | Front tip | Side passages and narrow garden paths |
| Tracked dumper, 1 tonne | 850 mm | High tip | Tipping straight into a skip |
| Site dumper, 3 tonne | 1.6 m | Swivel tip | Open sites, stockpiles and backfilling |
Sizes are for planning. A high-tip dumper lifts its skip to empty into a builder's skip without a ramp.
Working with the digger
When we supply both machines, the two operators work as one crew.
- The routeWe agree the run
The path from the dig to the skip or stockpile, and anything on the way that needs boarding or protecting.
- LoadingThe digger loads the dumper
Spoil goes straight into the dumper, so it is not handled twice.
- TippingThe dumper empties at the skip
A high-tip dumper empties over the side of the skip. Others tip onto a heap for the digger to load.
- ReturnMaterials back to the work
On the way back the driver brings stone or sand, so the run is not wasted.
What we need to know about the route
For a dumper, the route matters more than the dig.
- The narrowest pointThe tightest gap between the dig and the skip.
- DistanceRoughly how far the dumper travels each way.
- Slopes and stepsRamps, steps or kerbs on the route, with photos if possible.
- SurfacesLawn, block paving or anything that needs protecting.
Dumper questions
Do I need a dumper as well as a digger?
If the skip is more than a few metres from the dig, usually yes. Without one, the digger stops while spoil is barrowed away.
Can a tracked dumper climb steps?
Steps need ramps or a different route. Send photos of any steps and we will say what is possible.
Can I hire a dumper on its own?
Yes, with its driver, for jobs where your team is digging.
